Austin Fashion Week Poster

The Austin Fashion Week poster was released today and it is stunning!

The poster was created by Gary Dorsey at Pixel Peach. It's beautiful and a little creepy at the same time. Maybe it's because I just got back from finally seeing Alice in Wonderland, but I find it a bit Tim Burtonesque. I love it and can't wait til Fashion Week.

Domain Fashion Show Event

The fashion show event at the Domain this past weekend was a lot of fun. I got to see several runway shows, have some free food and wine, and meet some cool people. Two people I met were Glenn Allen (left) and Jorge Rubalcava (right). Jorge is a wardrobe stylist from San Antonio and he helped style the shows on Saturday night. His friend Glenn is an aspiring fashion designer from Austin. And here is Jorge with Ali, a stylist out of LA who was working on the shows Friday night.

As far as the fashions go, I was a little underwhelmed. Taking into consideration that the Domain houses some of the more expensive stores to shop at in Austin, it seems like they could have come up with some better outfits. There were only a couple things that stood out in my mind, but I guess that's better than nothing.

The cool thing about a fashion show like this is that everything you see here can be purchased right now in the stores, so if you like anything you see you can head over to the Domain and go get it right now.

Here is my review of the fashions:

Banana Republic
This was one of the looks that stood out for me.

STYLE Watch

One of my goals when I started this blog was to capture photos of people out and about in Austin sporting interesting/cool/awful/noteworthy/etc. style. I'm calling these entries "STYLE watch" and there will be lots more to come. Enjoy!

Where: The Domain fashion show event
When: Friday March 26, 2010

This guy might not be keeping austin stylish but he is definitely keeping austin weird! I would love to see what the rest of his closet looks like.

This girl is rockin 2 different style trends: the studious hipster look mixed with bohemian chic. I kinda wish she would have stuck with one or the other. I like the headband and I like the glasses, but not together. What do you think?

This photo almost deserves a separate blog post all to itself. I feel like this couple must already have a photo on awkwardfamilyphotos.com that I don't know about. Fashion advice to all the couples out there from keep austin stylish: if you look at your partner and you think for a second you are looking in a mirror, change your outfit ASAP.

Urban Outfitters Live in Austin

Two days ago, with no plans and no particular purpose I walked into the Urban Outfitters on the drag. On my way I overhear a girl tell her friend that my dress is cute. This is enough to make this non-eventful outing a good one. But little did I know, there was more to come.

I walk into the store and start to browse slowly making my way to the back of the store. Then, like Dorothy walking into the land of Oz, my black and white world turned to color when I see that there is a live band and wait, could it be? Yes, free beer. How could I resist?

Drinking and shopping are a fun combo. just as long as you don't drink so much that you make poor buying decisions. But for someone who is stuck in a fashion rut and tends to buy the same types of things again and again, it might be a good idea!

After a second look around at the clothes, I came across this sailor themed dress with anchors on it. I really like that the nautical theme is a big trend this Spring. Personally I have been loving nautical themed clothes for a long time. A section in my closet is dedicated to navy and white clothes that would be boat appropriate, so I couldn't resist trying this dress on. Unfortunately it was too small on top and it was also kinda see through...yikes.

Even though I didn't walk out with anything, this was a fun shopping experience. Oh wait, I did walk out with a free tote bag. Huzzah!

Mirror Mirror

Mirror mirror on the wall around my neck, who's the fairest of them all? Well, it was a long winter and with all this blogging, I definitely could use some sun (or at least some bronzer).

The necklace you see pictured here is in fact a mirror. I love when fashion and practicality shake hands and unite to create something fab.

This entire outfit was found at the Domain. When the Domain first opened, I was hesitant, but I have grown to really enjoy it. And now that there are less expensive stores such as Forever 21, as well as department stores like Dillard's, there is even more reason to shop at the North side of Austin.

necklace: Forever 21, dress: Ark & Co. at luxe apothetique, shoes: Steve Madden at Macy's

The Domain is having a fashion show later this month. I will post details on that soon, so stay tuned! I have to go windex my necklace now.

SXSW Fashion Essentials

Whether you are from Austin or are just visiting, here are my Fashion Essentials for SXSW

1. Shades

You gots to have some killer shades for SXSW whether they be some vintage Ray Bans, new Pradas, or some neon plastic shades you stole from a fraternity kid. You don't want a headache from squinting at the day parties. Plus, the sun is always a little brighter after a night of drinking (this is assuming you actually stop drinking long enough to have a hangover.)

2. Boots

I believe in the power of the boot. To me, boots will always be the perfect footwear, but boots are especially essential when you will be doing a lot of walking and/or dancing. Plus, there are many styles to choose from and they go great with almost any dress. You could rock a cowboy boot, motorcycle boot, or even a high heeled bootie at night. (Oh yeah, boots are also a good place to store your flask for those parties that don't have free booze shhh.)

3. Facial Hair

This one is for the guys (hopefully that was obvious.) The guys in Austin have been getting very creative with their facial hair in the past couple of years and I'm diggin it. The hipster mustache, long side burns, or the full out grizzly beard. I'm sure you will see facial hair in many forms at southby and I'm sure you will enjoy the spectacle. Guys, if you haven't rocked the facial hair before, now's the time. Hopefully it's not too late for you to grow it out.

4. Hands Free Purse

This is a practical one. I have a large Coach purse that I use on a daily basis, and then I have what I call my "downtown purse." The downtown purse is what you will need for SXSW. It must have a long strap and preferably be able to go across your shoulder if needed. It needs to be just big enough to hold everything you absolutely need which includes phone, id, money, maybe camera, gum etc.

5. Bright Lip Shade

Think Sandra Bullock at this year's Oscars. I loved that pop of color she was sporting. In the past bright red has been a popular look, but I think this year it will be all about the bright pink shades. This is the time to have fun with your lip color. Don't be afraid to go with something bold, but don't make yourself look like a clown either. Choose a shade that works best for your skin tone.

6. Rock Star Attribute

This could be in the form of jewelry, a clothing item, a hat, etc. Most of us have at least something in our closet that we bought when we were feeling like a rock star. This has happened to me a few times...it's the reason why I have a cropped motorcycle sequined jacket in my closet. If there was ever a time to wear something that makes you feel like a rock star, SXSW is that time. But if you're not an actual rock star, I would only work one "rock star attribute" otherwise you might look like you are wearing a costume. And lord help us if you are labeled a "poser." :P

have fun at SXSW and of course,

Shimmer & Bliss Spring 2010 Launch Party

My Cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore... I couldn't get that Stevie Wonder song out of my head last night after returning from the Shimmer and Bliss Spring 2010 launch party. My Cherie Haley is the creator of Shimmer and Bliss, an accessories line consisting of hand dyed silk scarves. My Cherie personally dyes each scarf in her own home and says "Dye is everywhere in my house. On the kitchen cabinets, everywhere." But My Cherie loves putting so much persoanl care into each and every scarf because she wants them to be special.

Local band, Suede brought the jams with my personal favorite song of the night being Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." Oooooh yeeeaaaah.

The lovely girl on the left there is Kappie Bliss, owner of the W.2nd street boutique Beyond Tradition where this event was held and also where you can go to buy a Shimmer and Bliss scarf if your heart desires.

My Cherie spent the night showing everyone how to rock a scarf. The cool thing about these scarves is their uniqueness. Each one is hand dyed, so no 2 scarves are exactly alike. And like the scarves themselves, the people that wear them are unique and can choose to wear the scarf in their own special way.

I had to go back for seconds at the Cannoli Joe's table. Is it wrong to go back for seconds when the food is free? It was too good for me to care about etiquette.

Here was my unique way of wearing my scarf. I used it to tie my hair into a ponytail. My Cherie said she had never seen someone wear the scarf like it before, but this is actually my new favorite hair accessory now. Plus, the big hair bow is going to be a trend this Spring. I am shimmering blissfully.

Rainy Days and Mondays

It's rainy AND it's Monday. I'm trying to not let it get me down by wearing this colorful vintage top I got at Blue Velvet. You might remember Bue Velvet from when it was on the drag, but it's now at North Loop near one of my other favorite vintage stores, Room Service.

top: Blue Velvet, hat: Anthropologie, necklace: Forever 21, jeans: SoLa

Oscar Fashion: Faves and Least Faves

The romantic look ruled the Red Carpet at the 2010 Academy Awards.

Overall the TRENDS of the night were:
-pastels such as light pinks and purples
-metallics
-ruffles
My Faves

It was Sandra Bullock's night in more ways than one. Besides, winning the Oscar for Best Actress, Sandra looked stunning in this glamorous metallic dress. The lipstick color brought interest to the dress and made the look my favorite of the night.

Rachel McAdams is just so cute! The print of this dress was so different, but in a good way. And I love the way the dress fits her on top. This was a very cool choice. Plus her earrings were fab.

Meryl Streep looked great in white. I'm giving Meryl one of the best dressed of the night because a lot of times the 50+ gals don't get it right, but she got it right. She looks appropriate for her age but still hot.

Maggie Gyllenhal stood out amongst the metallics and pastels that seemed to rule the night. I love a good bold print. This dress is fun and flirty, while still remaining elegant for the Oscars.

My Least Faves

Yes, I realize that Sarah Jessica Parker was wearing Chanel Couture, but I'm sorry. Some dresses are made for the runway and not real life. This dress did absolutely nothing for SJP's body, plus the hair was just way too much for me. I wanted to pop that gigantic bun off her head.

So I get that fashion isn't Tina Fey's thing, but couldn't her stylist for once at least make it look like she cared? The dress isn't horrible I guess, but it's not great. And the hair is a little too "business in the front, party in the back."

Charlize Theron is on the least Faves list for an obvious reason: Cinnabon Boobs.

There is something kind of pretty about Zoe Saldana's dress. I think the color and ruffles at the bottom are actually pleasing, but the slit in the dress is awkward. As you work your way up from the bottom of the dress, it looks like the dress turns into a completely different dress on top. I wish the top and the bottom had worked together more organically.

Jennifer Lopez's dress is just too stiff. It looks like it would be uncomfortable to touch, doesn't it? Maybe the fabric looked better in person, but on camera it just looks tacky. I actually don't like anything about this dress. And why is Jennifer Lopez at the Oscars anyway?
