Austin Hat Week

Austin Fashion Week this year could have been called Austin Hat Week.   Every time I turned around I saw another interesting and vintage inspired head piece.  Sometimes a hat adds something to an outfit making the ensemble look complete and finished.  But, other times a hat is the star of the show making the rest of the outfit draw your attention to the hat itself.  I saw instances of both of these stylish scenarios during Austin Fashion Week this year.  I think the amount of hats I saw during the week can be attributed to the fact that there are several hat designers in Austin itself.

It makes sense that there would be an abundance of hat designers in Austin.  Austin is a town known for loving vintage.  There was once a time when it was considered disgraceful for a lady not to wear a hat outside of the house.  While these societal pressures of yesteryear will obviously never become the norm in Austin, I can see vintage style hats becoming a more popular staple in our fashion scene.

Will you be wearing a vintage style hat this fall/winter season?

Vintage Vivant

There's just something about pin curling your hair and wearing a floor length gown that gets you feeling like a glamorous gal.  Vintage Vivant is a monthly one night event described as a "night for glamorous anarchists to dance, drink, and delight at a bevy of 1920s and 30s themed entertainment."  As I sat at the Swan Dive in my vintage dress from Blue Velvet munching on some "grapes of wrath" I wondered why I had never attended this event before.

Vintage Vivant is the perfect opportunity to play dress up.  And seeing as I like to play dress up almost every day, this party seemed like something I would have gone to a long time ago.  The Great Depression themed party a few weekends ago was my first Vintage Vivant experience, but it definitely won't be my last.  This event is held once a month with a different theme, and I am already anticipating the next one!

Check out my photos from the event:

Outfit: Grandma's Flowers

Spring has sprung and so have my grandma's famous flowers.  They only last for a few weeks so I got some photos in front of them while I had the chance.  It was unexpectedly cold yesterday which I was not a fan of since just the day before it was starting to feel like summer (my favorite time of year).  But I took advantage of the cool weather by wearing my suede fringe coat that I bought at the end of the winter and thought I wouldn't get to wear until next year.

Outfit: South by South Mess

Here I am at the end of the last night of SXSW looking a little disheveled.  I left the Samsung presented Perez Hilton party early to go eat at Magnolia Cafe because I was tired and starving.  I bought this green skirt at the American Apparel Flea Market in the Austin Convention Center the day before.  The skirt had a weird spot on it but it was discounted down to only $8 so I took it home and washed it and the spot came out!  Of course the next morning I immediately spilled something on it after having it on for approximately 5 minutes.

Magnolia Family Vintage

I've been meaning to write about Magnolia Family Vintage ever since the lovely Tolly over at Austin Eavesdropper told me about it, but, this month has been kinda crazy what with Austin Fashion Week and me leaving the country for a bit.  But, y'all should know that in my downtime I have been checking out this awesome online vintage store.

Magnolia Family Vintage launched the first week of August by fellow Austin blogger Sarah Jessica Dean of The Year of Living Thriftily.  If Austin does one thing right in the realm of fashion, it's vintage.  Not only do I love the clothing for sale offered on this site, but I love that a local blogger opened up her own online store.  It kinda gives me hope that maybe one day I could do something badass such as this.

If I wasn't so poor right now I would buy these things (yes I don't even have the ability to buy thrifted clothing. The 2 things I bought at Blue Velvet the other day don't count shhh):

Rainy Days and Mondays

It's rainy AND it's Monday. I'm trying to not let it get me down by wearing this colorful vintage top I got at Blue Velvet. You might remember Bue Velvet from when it was on the drag, but it's now at North Loop near one of my other favorite vintage stores, Room Service.

top: Blue Velvet, hat: Anthropologie, necklace: Forever 21, jeans: SoLa
