Style Watch: The White Party

Where: The Long Center

When: Friday, May 27, 2011

It's hard to stand out in the crowd when you and everyone else are forced to wear the same color.  So for the Lifework's White Party, it's all about the accessories and the pop of color.  The most popular pop of color at the White Party this year was definitely blue.  Gold, turquoise, green, and yellow were some of the runners up for most popular accent color.

My friend and fashion designer made me a custom designed dress for the White Party, but unfortunately the measurements that I gave her were quite off (I blame the girl who measured me for a bridesmaid dress I am wearing in a wedding in September, because those were the measurements I gave my friend).  The dress she made me was way cuter than the backup dress I had to end up wearing, so I was pretty bummed.  But I at least got to show off my awesome gold stilettos I got from Betsey Johnson.

Check out what everyone was wearing at the White Party:

My Outfit: Those Summer Nights

It all started when my friends and I had an event to go to at the Highball and then wanted to howl at the moon at Barton Springs after.  What's a girl to wear on an evening such as this?  That's when I was forced to get a little creative and used my awesome 80s swimsuit that I got at Room Service as a top.  This swimsuit works with several different skirts to be transformed into a great dress.  Best $10 ever spent.  The swimsuit dress is perfect for fun in the sun, dancing, and debauchery.  Summer nights in Austin are now even better.

Outfit: Patriotic Pride

I went a little crazy last night when the news broke that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed.  I tweeted up a storm, I opened up a bottle of wine, I sang the national anthem at home by myself, and then I busted out my paints and my scissors to make a t-shirt.  What did you do?

Recap: Simon Fashion Now at the Domain

Although I am not a big fan of malls, the Domain has some things going for it that make it better than your average mall.  For one, it's outside so you can walk around and relax with your dog.  The other big benefit is that there are some nice restaurants that call Domain their home.  Restaurants like NoRTH and McCormick and Schmik's are much more than a step above normal food court fare. And although when it first opened the Domain might have felt intimidating to those not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on one clothing item, the introduction of Forever 21 and the Domain II section now offer a much wider variety of price points for the average shopper.

This weekend the Domain played host to Simon Fashion Now, a yearly event in which Simon Malls around the country hold runway shows to highlight the upcoming trends for the season.  The runway shows during Simon Fashion Now this year were comparable to that of last year's event.  The fashion at a mall show is obviously not supposed to intrigue and inspire your wardrobe creativity, but rather to inspire you to buy these wearable items.  Everything that walked the runway was safe and well put together, which is good but expectedly slightly boring.
But one of the pros of a big corporate fashion show like this one versus our funky and sometimes ill-prepared local Austin shows, is that the models actually know how to walk a runway.  It's refreshing to take runway photos of models who know the pace at which to walk and allow for photos to be taken.  The other nice thing about a show like this one is that it gives you a real look at what trends we can expect to see in stores right now and in the next couple of months.  From what I saw at these shows it looks like bright colors, color blocking, crochet tops, and floppy beach hats are in for summer.

Outfit: It's Too Early For This

Whose idea was it to have a fashion show at 11am in the morning on a Sunday?  And not only that, but the dress code was cocktail attire.  After the weekend I had, it was definitely too early for this.  I set my camera up on a random car in the parking lot of the Hilton Hotel in order to take some photos of the outfit I wore to the Austin Threads Exclusive Fashion Show because A) I'm classy like that B) I've completely lost all sense of shame and embarrassment and C) I really wanted to show y'all this amazing top I got at Feathers.  I definitely got a few odd stares from people walking in the parking lot.

Take Me To The Library

I've been slacking on taking photos of my outfits lately.  That all changes today!  My outfit today uses my 'ol reliable color combo of black and white clothing with red lipstick as a pop of color.

I love the nerdy schoolgirl vibe of this vintage dress I got from Prototype.  Just for kicks I had to take photos in this outfit while wearing these 1960s vintage glasses frames.  I purchased these glasses for a play that I did the costume design for awhile back.  I don't need glasses, but if I did, I would wear all sorts of crazy frames, especially with outfits like this.

Rawr!

I wore this outfit to the fashion show I went to last Thursday.  I was really excited about figuring out a way to wear my new leopard print tights.   I was in a really good mood this night and met some fun people at the show.  I came home and had to have an improptu photo shoot.  In case you haven't noticed, animal prints are a big trend right now.  Rawr!

Natural Neutrals

If you follow me on twitter then you might have already seen me in this dress.  I posted a photo of me wearing it in the dressing room of Urban Outfitters.  I had to immediately share my excitement of finding a super cute dress on sale for only $9.99.  Yes this dress was $9.99!  I love how it uses what most people might consider to be bland neutrals, and yet, is still a really interesting dress.  I have actually always been a big fan of grey and consider it to be one of the most interesting colors.

Mixing neutrals is a trend I have noticed recently that I and other fashion conscious people have been sporting.  I like how this outfit has a natural vibe, without being granola.  And, my elephant necklace adds the perfect pop of color to keep things intereting.

What Happens at an ANTM Casting

I went to the America's Next Top Model casting call yesterday.  I figured I might as well go through the process to get a real report of what it was like.

The casting call started at 2:00.  I arrived at the Driskill and got in line around 1:30.  There were already a lot of girls standing in line by the time I got there.  It took about 3 hours for me to get to the front where they hand you a folder with your number on it to put all your filled out forms and photos in.  I was #98 in line which seemed odd to me because the line actually felt mcuh longer than that.  But, I have never been good at judging how many people are in a large group.

A Petticoat Always Makes You Feel Pretty

I have decided that wearing a petticoat automatically makes you feel pretty.  It kinda makes me feel like a little girl and a woman at the same time.  Twirling around in one reminds me of my childhood.  Actually I think this exact one I am wearing here is one that I twirled around in as a kid.  But, the poofy prettiness also reminds me of a wedding dress so then I start to feel old.  Either way, I like it.  I think I should wear this petticoat under stuff more often.   I also got to wear my red boots yesterday which doesn't happen often in the summer, but, it had been raining so they seemed appropriate.

I wore this outfit to play with deer, go to Wholefoods, and take my computer to the Apple store to get it fixed.  I went to the Apple store in the Domain which happens to be right next door to the new Anthropologie.  So you can probably guess where I spent my 15 minutes while waiting for my computer.

Bambi Lusts Over the Woodsies

I have no business buying a pair of $165 5 inch heels right now, but, that didn't keep me from trying them on.  Even though I felt like a newborn baby fawn awkwardly ambling around in these Jeffrey Campbell "Woodsies", I couldn't help but imagine how brilliant it would be if I could have them and learn to strut around town without fear of wobbling and ending up in a bush somewhere.

Domain Fashion Show Event

The fashion show event at the Domain this past weekend was a lot of fun. I got to see several runway shows, have some free food and wine, and meet some cool people. Two people I met were Glenn Allen (left) and Jorge Rubalcava (right). Jorge is a wardrobe stylist from San Antonio and he helped style the shows on Saturday night. His friend Glenn is an aspiring fashion designer from Austin. And here is Jorge with Ali, a stylist out of LA who was working on the shows Friday night.

As far as the fashions go, I was a little underwhelmed. Taking into consideration that the Domain houses some of the more expensive stores to shop at in Austin, it seems like they could have come up with some better outfits. There were only a couple things that stood out in my mind, but I guess that's better than nothing.

The cool thing about a fashion show like this is that everything you see here can be purchased right now in the stores, so if you like anything you see you can head over to the Domain and go get it right now.

Here is my review of the fashions:

This was one of the looks that stood out for me.

Mirror Mirror

Mirror mirror on the wall around my neck, who's the fairest of them all? Well, it was a long winter and with all this blogging, I definitely could use some sun (or at least some bronzer).

The necklace you see pictured here is in fact a mirror. I love when fashion and practicality shake hands and unite to create something fab.

This entire outfit was found at the Domain. When the Domain first opened, I was hesitant, but I have grown to really enjoy it. And now that there are less expensive stores such as Forever 21, as well as department stores like Dillard's, there is even more reason to shop at the North side of Austin.

The Domain is having a fashion show later this month. I will post details on that soon, so stay tuned! I have to go windex my necklace now.
