My Outfit: 90s School Kid

What have you been wearing lately in this gross weather?  When it starts to get chilly, I turn to button downs, mostly of the plaid and flannel variety.  I walked into Sugar Mama's the other day and I swear the guy working the counter and I had the same shirt on.  Oh well!

The best thing about this outfit, besides the fact that I'm wearing super thrifty things that came from Goodwill and TJMaxx, is the bag!  This classic looking purse is actually in fact a CAMERA BAG.  It's so genius and one of the coolest things I have ever purchased online.  It's the perfect bag for a fashion blogger like myself who has to look cute while also carrying around a camera.

Ask Me: What do I Wear to an Outdoor Charity Concert?

My email inbox has been filling up with a lot of style questions lately, so I have decided to make this a segment on the blog.  If you have a style question, please ask me!  Here's one I got from a new Austinite....

Hi,
I am new to Austin, saw your fashion blog and seeking advice.
I have been here less than a month and not sure what to wear to a charity concert.  It is an evening event at a home.  The concert will be outside.
Background:  I am a mom of two, tend to be more on the conservative side of dressing.
Any recommendations you have would be wonderful.

Thank you,
Puzzled by fashion

Outfit: You Owe It To The Hat

I was wearing this hat downtown somewhat recently when I ended up singing "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany at a bar doing karaoke.  After my amazing performance, an older gentleman came up to me and requested that for my next song I sing a Debbie Gibson song because I "owe it to the hat."  He was right.  It was wrong of me to wear a Debbie Gibson style hat and sing a song by her arch nemesis.

Outfit: Shorts That Look Like a Skirt

I don't know why but lately I have been finding a lot of shorts that look skirts.  I'm kinda loving it.  How can you go wrong with high waisted bright colored floral shorts?  Well, you could probably go wrong very easily.  But what's undeniably right about these shorts is that they have pockets!

I'm ready for summer like you wouldn't believe, but my wardrobe needs a little maintenance.  I definitely need to find some casual but hot summer black wedges.  I'm officially on a hunt for them starting...now.

Outfit: Grandma's Flowers

Spring has sprung and so have my grandma's famous flowers.  They only last for a few weeks so I got some photos in front of them while I had the chance.  It was unexpectedly cold yesterday which I was not a fan of since just the day before it was starting to feel like summer (my favorite time of year).  But I took advantage of the cool weather by wearing my suede fringe coat that I bought at the end of the winter and thought I wouldn't get to wear until next year.

Home is Where the Fried Chicken Is

I struggle these days on whether to call Ft.Worth my home, or to call Austin my home.  Although I call myself an Austinite, like the majority of Austinites, I was not born and raised in Austin.  Ft. Worth, Texas was my original home.

This weekend I went "home" because it's my favorite time of year in Ft.Worth right now...rodeo time.  The rodeo is really the only event I ever go back to Ft.Worth for.  My hometown doesn't have as much going for it as Austin, but it does have a couple of awesome perks:
-great antique shopping
-awesome museums
-my mom's fried chicken

Friday at Frisco

Most of my family is still in town for the holidays, which means I feel overfed and lazy (and loved).  My family is all about going out to eat.  Our days are planned entirely around our meals and where we will eat them.  When outsiders spend time around my family I'm pretty sure they are incredibly confused about how we are all not obese.  Today's New Year's Eve lunch was spent at a restaurant my family has been frequenting ever since I can remember, Frisco.  They somewhat recently updated their menu and added some new items, so I actually like the place even more now.

I can't believe I can fit into this skirt right now, or that I can be wearing a skirt without tights on New Year's Eve.  I love crazy Texas weather!

Happy New Year's Eve!

Fir is Murder

"What'd you kill?" Said my sister as she opened the door to my car to find my fur and suede coat strewn across the back seat.  No I have not been hunting lately.  Or ever really (except that time my dad taught me how to shoot prarie dogs at our ranch when I was like 12...)  I bought this vintage coat at Uptown Modern a few months ago back when it was nowhere near cold enough to wear.  But how could one resist the awesomeness of such a coat priced around $100 in perfect condition and that fits like a glove.  Plus, because this coat is made of real leather and fur, it's actually very warm.

Contrary to how it may appear from these photos, I'm not a supporter of real fur.  I mean, if I was a cave woman hunting for my food I wouldn't think twice about wearing the skin of the bear I just killed, but, I am not a cave woman.  However, because this coat is vintage, I don't really feel bad about wearing it.  It already exists so I might as well wear it, right?  Is that wrong?  I really hope I don't get P.E.T.A. people knocking on my door tomorrow (seriously, those people are crazy).

I wore this outfit the other night to pick out a Christmas tree with my family and then to the opening party of MOSS.  Fur was a big trend amongst the crowd at MOSS, but I'm pretty sure most of the fur wearers were sporting faux fur.  How do y'all feel about real fur?  What about real Christmas trees?  Seeing all those "murdered" trees next to my fur coat was an interesting parallel.  Is a fake tree better or worse for the environment? Hmmm...

One of Many Ponchos

I actually took these photos about a month ago and never posted them for some reason.  Since I have been working as a costume assistant for a movie filming in Smithville, I haven't had much of any free time to take style photos lately (I'll go into that in more detail in a future post).  But even though these photos are a little old, this is a look I have been rocking a lot lately.

I got this vintage poncho from Room Service last year and it is one of my favorite vintage finds.  I actually own several ponchos and I'm a big fan.  They are comfy, roomy, and give an outfit an eclectic vibe.  I specifically remember feeling this day like I could live in a cottage and grow my own organic vegetables and attempt to craft jewelry while my husband chops wood for our fire (apparently I like to daydream about marrying a lumberjack).  It's funny how sometimes your outfit reflects your mood and sometimes your mood reflects your outfit.

Hey There, Cupcake Sweater

It was way back in April that I purchased this cupcake sweater at Top Shop when I was visiting my friend in New York.  Ever since then I have been imaging wearing it at one of my favorite local cupcake spots, Hey Cupcake.  And even though it is a lightweight sweater, it really hasn't been cold enough to wear it...until now!

Yesterday was the second time I have worn the cupcake sweater and this time I decided it was time to have my photo taken in it.  Luckily via twitter, a special photographer and friend of mine agreed to come have a cupcake photo shoot with me on the spur of the moment.   This shoot was way too much fun.  And this coat I got from local boutique Adelante a couple of years ago has the perfect whimsical and happy vibe  to match the cupcake sweater.

Rawr!

I wore this outfit to the fashion show I went to last Thursday.  I was really excited about figuring out a way to wear my new leopard print tights.   I was in a really good mood this night and met some fun people at the show.  I came home and had to have an improptu photo shoot.  In case you haven't noticed, animal prints are a big trend right now.  Rawr!

Pumpkin Patch

It was about 20 minutes into our hour long drive to Sweetberry Farm that I discovered my friend Josh didn't even like pumpkins and had no intention of picking out a pumpkin of his own.  I'm not going to lie, in the past something like this probably would have put a damper on my own excitement of picking out pumpkins.  But, I am a new person these days and nothing can get in the way of my excitement for whatever it is I'm doing.  My new outlook on life is that everything should be cherished.  Thich Nhat Hanh has even taught me to enjoy doing the dishes.  But, I'll get back to somehow making this about fashion and will try not to go on a Buddhist rambling.  (But y'all should also know that Josh ended up pushing my wheelbarrow full of pumpkins for me while I looked around so it all worked out for the best).  Thanks Josh!

This time of year is amazing because it means you get to start wearing a new wardrobe.  The cooler weather allows you to incorporate jackets, scarves, hats, and tights into the mix.  And more importantly than the clothes aspect (yes I just said something was more important than clothes on a fashion blog), after Halloween you get to start thinking about Thanksgiving which means being around family and cooking and eating delicious food.  I start smiling just thinking about it.

Made in Taiwan

I skipped out on Austin FashionWeek this year because I had the opportunity to visit Taiwan.  Seeing as I have not done a lot of traveling outside of the U.S. it seemed like the right choice to make.  But, I hope y'all enjoyed the guest blogging about Austin Fashion Week by my friends while I was gone.  While they were witnessing fashion shows and mingling with local fashion designers, I was doing this:

-trying to do yoga led by a teacher speaking chinese
-walking a hiking "trail" in what appeared to be a jungle
-shop shop shopping
-drinking tea
-eating rice
-eating more rice
-almost crashing a scooter
-attempting to surf (and not drown)
-trying not to throw up every time i smelled stinky tofu
-getting asked to have my photo taken with random asian people
-practicing my dj skills in room 601 after our friend's wedding

Here are some photos of what I wore and the ambiance of Taipei.  I of course sported a lot of local Austin fashion all the way in Taipei.  There will be more photos to come of the street fashion and trends that I noticed while there.

A Petticoat Always Makes You Feel Pretty

I have decided that wearing a petticoat automatically makes you feel pretty.  It kinda makes me feel like a little girl and a woman at the same time.  Twirling around in one reminds me of my childhood.  Actually I think this exact one I am wearing here is one that I twirled around in as a kid.  But, the poofy prettiness also reminds me of a wedding dress so then I start to feel old.  Either way, I like it.  I think I should wear this petticoat under stuff more often.   I also got to wear my red boots yesterday which doesn't happen often in the summer, but, it had been raining so they seemed appropriate.

I wore this outfit to play with deer, go to Wholefoods, and take my computer to the Apple store to get it fixed.  I went to the Apple store in the Domain which happens to be right next door to the new Anthropologie.  So you can probably guess where I spent my 15 minutes while waiting for my computer.

Rainy Days and Mondays

It's rainy AND it's Monday. I'm trying to not let it get me down by wearing this colorful vintage top I got at Blue Velvet. You might remember Bue Velvet from when it was on the drag, but it's now at North Loop near one of my other favorite vintage stores, Room Service.

top: Blue Velvet, hat: Anthropologie, necklace: Forever 21, jeans: SoLa
