Spring is Sprouting

The Austin weather tried to trick me (and my tulips) into thinking Spring was here yesterday. The wonderful warmth and sunshine was of course short lived as tomorrow there is a chance of snow. *Shakes fist at the crazy TX weather*

But Spring is slowly sprouting and I'm getting excited about what I will be wearing for the next few months.

I frolicked in my garden yesterday to show off some of my favorite shoes and accessories I have gathered for Spring so far. My toes were peeping out in the sun for the first time in a long time, and this Spring is all about the peep toe.

All the fashion you see here was locally grown.

My Hat's Off to You, Gentlemen

How could one resist an invitation to a house party that promises an acrobatic flame throwing duo? Well, one can't.

There were many things for me to feast my eyes on at the house party I went to last night. In addition to the flame throwing spectacle performed by Flourish and Fool, I of course was paying attention to the fashions of the night.

I have to give it up to my Austin guys for showing up in some stellar ensembles. I think Fool (or was it Flourish?) said it best when he used the fashionable adjective "dapper" to describe how the guests were looking that evening.

I was pleasantly surprised to see several hats that night with the sailor hat probably being the most intriguing. This fellow was wearing a sailor hat "because why wouldn't I wear a sailor hat?"

My friend Ruwan was hesitantly rocking a hat for the first time, but I assured him that it was a stylish maneuver. If you stylish guys out there are looking for a hat, I suggest the modern haberdashery HatBox.

He was hat-less, but I think my favorite outfit of the night was worn by this gentleman who was sporting some thrift store threads.

I admit it, I love the vintage look that you thin guys can pull off with your Mick Jagger tight pants. And the pulled together look of a vest with a tie is just too dang cute. Good work gentlemen.

Walk Walk Fashion Baby: McQueen Walks Out of Our Lives

The fashion world was shocked Thursday Feb.11 to discover that fashion artist Alexander McQueen had died at the age of 40. I say "artist" instead of "designer", because that's what McQueen was. McQueen's fashion shows were always a visually stunning artistic production. He was one of those artists that you got really excited to see what he would come up with next.

Sources
say that McQueen was very close to his mother whose funeral was to take place one day after McQueen committed suicide in his home.

Recently, Lady Gaga had become McQueen's muse. It seemed like the perfect collaboration since both artists were known for pushing boundaries and blurring the lines between grotesque and beautiful. Gaga proudly rocked McQueen's "armadillo" shoes in her Bad Romance video. Check out the amazingness!

Alexander McQueen will truly be missed by the fashion world.

Be My Valentine: Part 2

Valentine's Day is this weekend! In Part 1 of Be My Valentine, I suggested the store Teddies for Bettys for your sexy undergarment shopping. Now that you are confident with what you will be wearing underneath, it's time to make sure you like what else you have on.

The perfect Valentine date outfit is naturally a dress. You will feel confident in a cute dress that is flattering for your figure, and if you are confident then your date will think you are hot! I suggest you shop at Blue Elephant for this weekend.

Blue Elephant is a local boutique on North Lamar that carries a mixture of designer brands such as Marc by Marc Jacobs and True Religion, as well as some not as pricey but equally cute pieces.

Right now Blue Elephant has a really nice selection of fun dresses that would be perfect for this weekend. It's particularly nice to see a selection of dresses with lots of fun flirty color.

Blue Elephant also has awesome makeup and beauty products, including fabulous brands such as Tokyo Milk and Fresh. So after you find a super cute outfit on the right hand side of the store, you can move on to the left side and grab something that will make you smell irresistible (I suggest Dead Sexy by Tokyo Milk).

Blue Elephant also has quite a bit of accessories, so you can pick out the perfect jewelry and maybe even a Marc Jacobs clutch to complete your Valentine look. I hope y'all find something that makes you feel confident and sexy this Valentines!

P.S. Blue Elephant has the Joe's Jean Leggings that I posted about recently. They were actually pretty comfy! Of the Joe's leggings they only had the black distressed ones, but they also had a couple of other brands and styles of the jean leggings.

When I open a fashion magazine...

When I open a fashion magazine I am looking for style inspiration. I skip past the articles about what my boyfriend is really thinking or what plastic surgery options will make my legs look thinner.

In fact, it's usually the designer ads that I stop and look at the most.

I guess it's not a surprise that I look at ads like they are art, since the dividing line between between art and marketing has been blurred for quite some time thanks to Mr. Warhol. I particularly find that with fashion ads, specific art influences can be found quite easily. I think this is why I find fashion photography beautiful.
The ad that got me thinking about all this is this one for Joe's Jean Legging.

The second I looked at it my brain screamed "Degas!" Degas has been one of my favorite artists for a long time, so this ad was particularly appealing to my Impressionist loving mind.

It got me wondering if the people for Joe's looked directly at Degas for inspiration or if they looked at what Degas had looked at for inspiration for so many of his works, ballet dancers. Because of the similar Impressionistic color schemes, I would be willing to bet that they looked at some Degas paintings. Either way, it makes me happy that Degas-like creations are still being produced, even if they are in the form of marketing tools.

By the way, this ad totally worked because I want to go to the store and try on these jean leggings! I wonder if they are comfy. And I wonder if any local boutiques are carrying them or will be carrying them soon...I will keep y'all updated on this!

DIY Skirt

Here is the skirt I made in my sewing class at the Stitch Lab! It's a perfect skirt for the spring and summer, but for now I paired it with a scarf and tights with boots. The fabric I used was purchased at The Common Thread (see previous post).

Be My Valentine: Part 1

"If I were a boy even just for a day, I'd roll out of bed in the morning, and throw on what i wanted, and go drink beer with the guys." Beyonce sits in a chair most days for hours and hours with people around her making her look perfect. It would be a relief for someone like her to get to roll out of bed and wear whatever she wanted. Us "average" girls, get to do this the majority of the time, so when special days like Valentine's Day come around it is our time to Beyonce it out!

Valentine's Day is 2 weeks away so you have some time to prepare what you are going to wear on your special night, be it with your hubby, boy toy, friends, or yourself! This post is Part 1 of my suggestions on where to go to do your Valentine shopping. Part 1 begins with probably the most important part: the underwear ;)

Teddies for Bettys is a local lingerie boutique somewhat new to the scene, having opened in October on South 1st Street. Besides having a badass name, Teddies for Bettys has a badass collection of designer lingerie and sleepwear brands including Cosabella, Betsey Johnson, and Undrest. They even carry the maternity line HOTMilk! I don't know about you, but I so rather shop for underwear in a boutique type setting as opposed to a department store.

In addition to sexy lingerie, Teddies for Bettys also has a decent selection of sexy toys (whipper tickler anyone?) and beauty products, so it is a one stop shop for everything you will need for a special night. And if you are flying solo this Valentine's day they've got the single gal covered with their selection of Jimmy Jane toys.

Teddies for Bettys is having a special book signing with Martha Hopkins, author of the cookbook InterCourses, this Saturday February 6th from 2-6pm. There will be samples from the book along with live music!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of Be My Valentine...
