Tribeza Style Week: Tribeza Fashion Show

Tribeza Style Week came to a close last Thursday night with the Tribeza Fashion Show featuring looks from By George, Feathers Boutique, Moss Designer Consignment, Y and I Boutique, Underwear, Estilo, Service Menswear, c.jane, The Garden Room, Kendra Scott Jewelry, Julian Gold, and Saks Fifth Avenue.  I thought the styling of this show was a step up from last year's as it involved more layering, detail, and texture.  It should come as no shock that my preferred looks of the night came from my personal favorites, Feathers and Moss.  Can I please have one of those colorful sequin dresses?...please?  Trends from this colorful, rich looking, and wearable runway included:

1) fur

2) sequins

3) fringe

4) knee high boots

5) vests for the guys

For some reason I couldn't stop dancing and wiggling in the photo pit, but I managed to get photos nonetheless (except for that one outfit that walked down the runway when the lights went out...)

Tribeza Style Week: Rock and Runway Show

Men's fashion shows are few and far between in Austin, so I was pleasantly surprised that one of 3 fashion shows of Tribeza Style Week was the all men's Rock and Runway Show.  The venue of the American Legion house combined with the abnormal amount of men at a fashion event made me feel like I was back in college hanging out at a frat house.  But luckily the fashions provided by By George, Allens Boots, and Service Menswear were not reminiscent of frat boy style.  I thought Service Menswear had a great collection at this show and provided the most variety of style with their looks which included some particularly cute nerdy chic outfits with a vintage vibe.  UT Fashion Show winner, Colton Gerard, showed off his impressive toggle coats once again which were responsible for his Best Collection win earlier this year.  And By George brought the most sophisticated looks to the show making the models look put together and dapper.

Tonight is Fashion's Night Out! FNO is a global shopping event that was created in 2009 to celebrate fashion (and help boost the economy).  You can check out the Fashion's Night Out website for a list of events happening in Austin at retail chains.  But, here are a few local Austin boutiques that are participating in FNO that you won't find listed on their site!..

Austin Fashion Week Pick: Margot Wolf

It's hard to stand out when you are a jewelry designer in Austin.  There are over 100 designers participating in Austin Fashion Week this year and a majority of those are jewelry makers.  But what makes Austin based designer Margot Wolf stand out is not only her unique designs, but the professional result her hands on talent and skill creates.  It's easy to find hand made jewelry in Austin, but it's not as easy to find handmade jewelry in Austin that doesn't look like an arts and crafts project.

Margot Wolf has been making jewelry for almost a decade now, so she's no newbie to the scene.  Although she didn't always know jewelry making would be her craft, from the moment she picked up her first jewelry-making tools she was hooked.  Margot fell in love with jewelry making and feels empowered to have found the perfect outlet for her creativity.  Her pieces are inspired by every avenue of her life from industrial elements such as a rusty nut from antiquated machinery, the fletching of an arrow, or even nature in its most pure and original form.  Margot often casts found natural specimens into metal, mainly silver, bronze, and gold vermeil.  Items that most people would find disturbing or treat as garbage such as a found dead scorpion corpse, Margot finds inspiring and beautiful.

Hearing her describe the process of using a cuttlefish bone to make one of her rings was intriguing and made me realize the skill and creativity that goes into each one of her pieces.  While her pieces are simple and can easily be layered with patterned garments or other jewelry, is is the uniqueness of her work that still makes her designs eye-catching.

Austin Fashion Week Awards Winners

Austin Fashion Week came to a close Saturday night at the Long Center with an awards show wrapping up the week's events.  Of course we don't give out any regular old trophies for the Austin Fashion Awards.  Winners receive the coveted "Golden Boot."

New York Style vs. Austin Style

I had a fabulous time in the big city but I am glad to be back where fried chicken is served with cream gravy instead of brown.

Besides taking in the tastes, sounds and sometimes questionable smells of New York, I of course focused most of my attention on the visuals and more specifically the clothes.
My fantastic friend Lauren Zaffaroni (a.k.a. Zaff) and I rented bikes and rode around Central Park (probably my favorite place in NY) but pulled over to chat about the difference between New York style and Austin style.

Zaff has been living in New York for over a year now and previously lived in Austin for 4 years, so she knows what's up.

I took a video of our interview but it didn't look so great and normally when I read blogs I don't play videos anyway and prefer to read, so I transcribed it for y'all:

Me: What would you say one of the big differences between New York style and Austin style is?

Zaff: I think people in New York wear a lot more black. Tons and tons of black. And here you have to dress more for the seasons and in Austin every day is summertime. Here you see a lot more people in nice coats and prettier outerwear because it's more important. And then shoes are different because it's more important that you have shoes that are good to walk in.. as I see that girl walking by in platforms...


Me: Would you say people in New York are more brand conscious than in Austin?

Zaff: Um probably. They probably know their brands better than people in Austin. I don't know. I don't spend a lot of time in areas where people are carrying Louis Vuitton bags but I think they might be more educated about brands.

Me: Is there anything about Austin style or fashion that you miss?

Zaff: Oh yeah. I miss cowboy boots. I mean, I could still wear my cowboy boots but not as often. I definitely miss that and I miss being able to wear summery clothes for a longer period of time. I miss that for sure.

Me: Are there any specific stores in Austin that you miss?

Zaff: I miss Room Service. You can't get vintage clothing here for a reasonable price at all. I miss thrifting in general. What else do I miss...I liked By George a lot but I didn't buy a lot there because I have no money.

Me: Is there anything stylewise from living in New York that you think you will take back with you if you move back to Austin or anywhere else?

Zaff: I don't know. That's a hard question. Yeah, probably. I will probably continue to wear a lot of black... and...yeah...that was a bad answer, sorry. Edit.

Me: Don't tell me how to edit my own video.

This Month's Tribeza

Normally when I first pick up a magazine, I look through the photos and then decide if I want to actually read the articles or not (I can't help the fact that I'm a visual person and a photography snob.) So when my eyes came across the "Black Canvas" photo spread in this month's Tribeza magazine, I was blown away and forced to actually do some reading (heaven forbid I read something longer than a text message.)

The photographer behind the "Black canvas" photo spread was Dan Winters. No wonder I was pleasantly surprised by the April issue. Dan Winters is a widely recognized and award winning photographer who shoots regularly for magazines such as The New York Times, Esquire, GQ, W Magazine,and more. He has shot portraits of various celebrities including our current President. Dan Winters has 3 residences, one being in Austin, but this is his first time to shoot a spread and cover for Tribeza.

The spread features clothes and jewelry from St.Thomas Boutique, Saks Fifth Avenue, Feathers, By George, Neiman Marcus, Eliza Page, Julian Gold, and Beyond Tradition with hair by Jose Luis Salon and makeup by W3ll People.

Rebecca Lankford Trunk Show at By George

By George, on North Lamar and 6th, is having a trunk show with jewelry designer Rebecca Lankford. According to her website, "Rebecca's jewelry designs range from Bohemian to Sophisticated."


Rebecca herself will be in the store on Friday December 4th from 10am - 6pm to show you her collection. This trunk show continues through Saturday December 5th from 10am - 6pm.

Local Austin Black Friday Deals

If you are all about the crazy deals of Black Friday, my suggestion is that you shouldn't forget about some of the local stores. Although the big chains that can usually be found in a mall are the stores that probably have the biggest sales, there are a couple local favorites that have some deals to consider. And the major benefit of shopping local on this crazy day is that you probably won't have to punch your way through the crowds, AND you might find some gifts to give that not everyone and their mom will open on Christmas day. Don't be scared by Black Friday.

By George Texas Tailgate

If you're not really "one of the boys" then why not embrace it? Before the UT game this Saturday, instead of drinking beer in a parking lot, you can sip a cocktail at By George. By George is having a "stylegate" before the football game this Saturday November 21 from 11am - 4pm. It's the perfect time to get some stylish UT game day wear.

And since the game doesn't start til 7pm then you still have some time to hit up a traditional tailgate with the boys. At least this way you will look cute doing so.

by george is having a Soiree tomorrow (Wednesday October 28th) from 6 - 8 pm with jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth. Irene is the founder and owner of the L.A. based jewelry company, Irene Neuwirth Inc.. You can meet Irene and check out her jewelry all while sipping a cocktail at by george on 6th and Lamar.

Then, there is the trunk show with Irene on Thursday October 29th from 12 - 5pm where you can buy directly from Irene. The trunk show will remain in the store for purchases from October 30th - October 31st.
