You Look Like a Girl From Abercrombie and Fitch

"I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch.
I'd take her if I had one wish."

Yes, I was just listening to "Summer Girls" by LFO.  When I put my iTunes on shuffle you really never know what is going to happen.  This morning it was actually being really lovely and consistent playing a string of 70s rock songs by musicians like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, the Doobie Brothers, and Electric Light Orchestra.  But, playing somewhere in the middle of all this, was a song highly popular at the end of the millenium "Summer Girls."

The lyrics to this song brought up many questions.  How old was I when this song came out?  Did I ever own anything from Abercrombie and Fitch?  Is Abercrombie and Fitch still popular today?  Why have I not skipped to the next song yet?

I quickly calculated that I was 14 when this song came out.  I thought back and remembered that when I was in the 6th and 7th grade, Abercrombie and Fitch was very popular.  Now that I thought about it, I remember convincing my mom to buy me a shirt from there once.  It wasn't even a cute shirt.  Deep down inside I knew this to be true.  At the age of 13 I was being a brand whore.  I only wanted this shirt because it had the Abercrombie and Fitch logo on it.  I quickly realized what a mistake it was.  I think I only wore that shirt once or twice because I just really didn't even like it.  After that I decided that I hated Abercrombie and Fitch and I think the song "Summer Girls" was probably the icing on the cake of hatred.

Now, to the third question of mine:  Is Abercrombie and Fitch still popular today?  I really do not have the answer to this question.  I haven't stepped foot in this store in probably 10 years and I have no idea what younger kids wear.  Is it still a popular store to hang out at in the mall?  My guess is that there is always an "Abercrombie and Fitch" for kids at that time in life where they don't know who the hell they are.  So, what is the current trend that kids in middle school feel like they need to adopt?

I feel like Austin is a city with a bit of an exception to this.  Kids growing up in Austin seem to be like mini badasses with a cool sense of personal style.  Am I wrong?  Yesterday while working at my casting job a mom brought in her twins who looked like they were probably around this middle school age.  No, the kids weren't the ones auditioning for anything, but they looked like characters straight out of a movie.  They were both dressed in a similar style, but not wearing the exact same outfit.  I thought they looked kind of like rock band avatars.  My co-worker Katie thought they looked like they just stepped out of  a Tim Burton movie.  I think the style was kind of a combiniation of both.  It was definitely out of the norm and interesting.  I hope their mom wasn't forcing these kids to wear this stuff.  Who knows, maybe inside they are actually little prepsters just dying to wear polos.

Basically, the point of this post (which I hope always comes across in every post) is that it's really important to be an individual.  It's fun to notice and point out trends.  But, in the end, you should only ever wear what you feel comfortable wearing.  Because as Coco Chanel once famously said, "Fashion fades, only style remains the same."

As I conclude this post, my shuffle appropriately leaves me with "Soul Education" by Jamiroquai.

I've got my soul education
You know its stitched into the clothes
That I wear
Got my life information
Upon the breeze that's blowing through my hair
Got a pocket full of rainbows
Oh and a sky to put them in so blue
So let the music come and save you.
I found a God that I can pray to
Deep inside my soul, hey.

keep rockin your own style and
keep austin stylish

haha! I find it really hard to delete songs off my ipod for some reason. Not sure how it got there in the first place though...

I'd venture that Urban Outfitters might be the new Abercrombie & Fitch for the Austin kid hipsters? You're right that there's always somewhere that kids feel is THE place to get clothes when they're just starting to find out who they are. Super interesting... How funny that you and Anslee both had recently heard that song, huh?
In other news, it was wonderful to meet you. Happy Birthday!
